What do I do and how long does it take?

How many hours do I work on average?

My electronic diary gives a fairly accurate inventory of the work I undertake:

County responsibilities (as a senior Opposition Group Member):

  • Meetings at County Buildings in Stafford account for an average of 16 hours a week
  • Constituency work….visiting people and places, opening events, speaking at public meetings and generally dealing with constituents’ issues takes on average 12 hours a week
  • Preparation, reading and research (generally in my office) is around 6 hours a week 

Lichfield District Council responsibilities (as Deputy Leader with two Cabinet Portfolios):

  • Meetings at the Council House in Lichfield account for an average of 8 hours a week  
  • Ward work, mainly dealing with residents’ issues takes on average 4 hours a week
  • General administration work accounts for around 3 hours a week

In addition I chair a couple of other public bodies:

International Centre of Excellence for Local eDemocracy (ICELE)

  • Operational and strategic policy meetings account for around 8 hours a month
  • Meetings in London amount to around 6 full days each year (incl travel)
  • Conferences, meetings and speeches abroad will take on average 8 full days each year 

Army Training Regiment (Lichfield) Independent Advisory Panel (IAP)

  • Administrative work amounts to around 2 hours a month 
  • Inspections at Whittington Barracks and Panel meetings take about 4 hours every other month
