Rattling cages wins money for Fazeley youth

A particularly good day today although it’s taken a while to get there. I’ve been trying to get some County money for the new Youth Centre in Mile Oak for nearly a year and, over recent months, I’ve taken to rattling cages all over County Buildings and in the media to try and get some progress.

Well, I’m delighted to say that despite the County’s overall disasterous position, my sabre rattling seems to have paid off. The upshot of my talks this week is that £15,000 has now been made available from the County to open up the Centre. Great news because that now means it will be funded until March 2009.

The funding will be spent on a youth coordinator for 10 hours each week, 3 evenings a week of professional youth worker support to train up voluntary youth workers from the local community and money in the pot for special projects, training for the youngsters and events.

So, things are moving well and I’m hopeful that the Centre could be open for the extra days this side of Christmas. The Fazeley and District Initiative are finding local people who are willing to spend time with youngsters in a voluntary capacity, recruitment of a dedicated youth coordinator is underway and sorting out which additional days the Centre will open is under discussion.

I’ll write more in due course.
